In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson

The 3rd grade girls are going to read In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson. They will make predictions before starting the book and at various points throughout the book. We can stop at the end of chapters and predict what is going to happen in the next one. This book is an example of the genre Historical Fiction. We will also be looking for genre characteristics as we read through this book.

I predict that the story is going to be based on baseball because of the tittle. This is a connection I made or twoI made.
-One of the charecters is well looks like a chiness girl like me that falls inlove with a baseball player hay what can I say that looks like it happens.
-Another one is I have a friend named Marcus Kok. He is a huge fan of baseball and Has a hole book of baseball cards. I think this is a connection because on the cover of the book there is a baseball player.
The last thing I am going to say that I think this book is going to be very intresting to me there will be alout of things happenig in this book.

In The Year Of The Boar And Jackie Robinson

I think the book is going to be partly about a famus baseball player named Jackie Robinson and a boar witch is a little chinese girl from China that moves to America not knowing the languge, clothing stile,or even how they live. Personaly I think that I will not like think book very much but you never know. Mabie I'll turn out to like this book after all. The Chinese girls name is "Shirley Temple Wong" who sails from China to America with a heart full of dreams. The cover of the book shows a girl looking like she is dreaming adout a player named Jackie Robinson !!

And that is my prediction.

I'm on the chapter"eight, Monsters". I wonder what will happen next and I have some ideas lested bellow.
-One of my ideas iare that she thinks she saw a monster but she really didn't because it was just a shadow of a real thing.
-Another was from the cover where Sherly goes down to the basement with her dad and the picture Sherly looks scared bcause of all the cluder in the room and the light that is barly on the ceiling and so dim with barly anough to see her own father. Cobwebs are every where and the pipes to each condow stick out like "monsters" creaping up the wall .Not to say they are real or any thing just from the illustratoin you can tell.
Those where all some things that think could happen and sugestions on how she felt and looked from the picture.

Dear Mrs.Edwards,

Right now I am watching a movie on the past and of the life on Jesus. Jesus was a carpander and he was God's own son.You should read John 3:16-17 to find out more of this story there. For God so love the world that he gave his only son that who so ever beleved in him shall not paresh but have ever lasting life. The gospel of Luke talks about the word of God.Jesus was cassens with a man named John because Jesus's mother Mary was cassens with a women named Elizabeth who gave birth to John. One day Jesus came and met a man named Peter who deneyed him saying"we have fished all day and caught nothing but if you really want us to them lets go".The man went out and caught so much fish there nets almost broke."Peter whey did you dote me?"Jesus asked Peter.Peter said,"Go away from me for I am sinnful and I doughted you my Lord".Then Jesus said," fear not for I will make you fishers of man not fish". That means that he will tell them to spred thae word to people that don't know about it. One day Jesus got into a bote with his desiples and said to them,"let us go to the other side of the lake."But them a storm came to a start and the desiples where scard so they woke Jesus from hiss sleep and said,"we are scared save us lord". Then Jesus said,You of little faith. where is your faith"?Then the storm stoped and everything was calm so calm. That story is to be cotenued another day.Jesus says to love your enemys as your neibors love you. So if you have a new student and you ask him things he is not prepered for then what good is asking him to answer when he has not herd of such thing yet.But if youteach him and nercher him he well grow with studys and strategies so that he may grow to be smart!

Love a bellever and your student,

The Year Of The Boar And Jackie Robonson
I think that the frist part of the book was really good. The chapters where named but they are also named by mounths. I thought that was intresting because I have never seen a book inpetickuler that had the mounths in the chapters. For example"Janury would be Chiness New Year". All these chapters are unecke in there own way!
The next chapter talked about the family going to America from there home town in china to a city named Brockland New York.It sorta tys in with the tittle that is February that is A Journey of Ten Thousend Miles . Then the xfamily traveled through the seven seas to America.
March was China's Little Ambassader that talks about how Shirly the main charecter goes to school and learns little by little the Americen Einglish and get new friends and neibors.
April was on A Hungry Goust and the Hungry Goust is a very strang chapter Shirly learns the Peiono and and meets a prarit that helps her teacher with the notes. The parit will call out a note and it is up to Shirly to press te write one.
May is on Two Black Eyes And Wispy Wiskers that I really don't like even though that is my birthday mounth.
June is on I Pleg A Lesson On The Frog witch doesn't sound very good but is o.k.When you think about that tittle then you probley are wondering what is the Frog.Well the frog represente a year. They also talk about a famus baseball player named Jackie Robonson.
July talks about Toscanini Takes A Walk and Toscanini is the Parite that helped her on the Piono.Shirly wants to take him for a walk and finily the Piono teacher agreisies.
August talks about Mounsters sorta like shadows. She and her dad go down to the apartment basement and Shirly thinks she sees mounsters but they are really only shadows of supleys.
Now I am trying to predict what the next chapter will be about that is called September in Secrets. I think this chapter is going to be about a specil "secret"that someone gives her and she doesn't want to tell anyone but she feels that she has to tell someone.

Lydia,
Great job summarizing and sharing your reflections on what you have read! I was also impressed at how well you worked with PowerPoint today. I have a new technology tool for us to explore next week!

November as " Moon Cakes Without Grandfather".

In this chapter Shirly tells a story with a young maident that her grandfather always told her. She looks outside and wishes that she could see the rest of her family and go back to celebrate her tradition of 14 days of the fith moon.

Lydia,
I can show you some typing websites/programs that you can use to work on typing skills (in fact, Ms. Feinman has a link on her blog . . . your sister is in that class). I have improved my typing skills over the years by typing a lot. :)
We may be able to work on the sign language alphabet some time . . . maybe we can work that into a PBL activity. :)
I have a really neat Math lesson for us to do today on the computer and/or ActivBoard. In fact, there is a link to it on the newest post in the AIG thinking log.

I like the end of the book because on page 166 Shirley gave Mr.Jackie Robison a "Key".Lydia and I both like that page. And that's why I like the end of this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It looks liket the girls had have fun reading the book. Their comments on what the chapters are going to be are insightful as well as funny. They are showing that they are using their imagination and are thinking about the meaning of the chapters.

I predict chapter eight, Monsters will be about monsters a important or non-important person found.
In chapter one a letter came to china from their dad.On the stamp there was a bald bird.
In chapter two sixth cousin went to America on a boat like the letter said.
In chap. three sixth cousin but now they call her Shirley, when she got to America she went to school.
In chap. four her classmates called her stupid.
In chap.five Shirley helped her teacher,Mrs.Rappaport do chores after school.
In chap. six the class talked about Jackie Robison.
In chap. seven it was the last day of school for Shirley.
And that was all about what I read!!!!
Isn't it cool!
